James Madison University (JMU, Madison, or James Madison) is a public research university in Harrisonburg, Virginia. Founded in 1908 as the State Normal and Industrial School for Women at Harrisonburg, the institution was renamed Madison College in 1938 in honor of President James Madison and then James Madison University in 1977. It has since expanded from its origins as a normal school and teacher's college into a comprehensive university. It is situated in the Shenandoah Valley, just west of Massanutten Mountain.

The Master of Science (M.S.) degree in Speech Language Pathology program is designed to provide a broad spectrum of academic and practicum experiences necessary for the education of specialists who deal with disorders of human communication and swallowing.

Clinical practical experiences are available in a wide range of professional settings including the JMU Applied Laboratory, various hospital and rehabilitation programs, and the public schools. The academic and clinical components of the program are consistent with the requirements for certification in speech-language pathology of the American Speech-Language-Hearing Association and for health and education licensure in speech-language pathology by the commonwealth of Virginia

 

Communication Sciences and Disorders graduate programs received reaccreditation through June 30, 2026 from the Council on Academic Accreditation of ASHA! The Clinical Doctorate in Audiology (Au.D.) and the Speech-Language Pathology (M.S. SLP) Programs underwent accreditation review during the 2017-18 academic year. Both programs were in compliance with the CAA Standards and have received full reaccreditation for an 8 year period.

Graduate applicants who are non-native speakers of English must demonstrate English language proficiency. Graduate programs at JMU invite high levels of student engagement through class discussions, collaborative projects, and interpersonal contact with professors and peers. The ability to communicate proficiently in the English language is vital to a student’s participation and success in the graduate program.

Submit satisfactory English language proficiency test scores from one of the following. These scores are typically acceptable*:

  • Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) iBT total score of 80 or above

  • International English Language Testing System (IELTS) overall band score of 6.5 or above

  • Duolingo total score of 105 or above.

*Some programs may require higher scores, please check with your program of interest to verify required minimum score. The scores on each of the subtests (reading, writing, speaking, and listening)  must be satisfactory.
