Our Masters degree in English Literature focuses on three periods of literary history: the Renaissance, the ‘long’ nineteenth century and the 20th/21st century. Each of the three period-based modules is structured on ideas of politics and social change and will enable you to explore the interface between literature and society. By reading a wide range of texts within their critical, cultural and historical contexts, we’ll encourage you to evaluate the ideas of others and develop your own critical perspectives and areas of specialised knowledge. You’ll develop skills and knowledge through a range of teaching and learning methods and by producing essays, presentations, annotated bibliographies and a major research project in the form of a dissertation. If you’re looking to advance your teaching career or move into academia, this postgraduate course is for you. The skills you learn will provide new directions for your future career and form the basis for your future study. You can also attend events organised by our Cambridge Writing Centre, including guest talks and live lit jams, where you can showcase your own creative writing and make new contacts in the industry.

For entry into a postgraduate taught course you'll need one of the following:

  • typically a UK honours degree with lower second class honours (2:2). Some courses may have different requirements: these will be stated on individual course pages
  • relevant qualifications obtained in your home country, as per Anglia Ruskin's country-specific entry requirements
  • some courses may have extra requirements, such as portfolios for art and design courses. These are outlined in our postgraduate course pages.

For entry into a postgraduate research course you'll need one of the following:

  • the usual entry requirement for an MPhil is a UK honours degree in a related subject, with Upper Second Class (2:1) or First Class honours or the equivalent from another country
  • for direct registration for a PhD you will usually require an appropriate Masters degree from a UK university or the equivalent from another country.

    • Overall 6.5 with 5.5 in each of the four language skills (listening, speaking, reading and writing)
  • TOEFL iBT
    • 88 overall with 17 in Writing and Listening, 18 in Reading and 20 in Speaking 
  • Pearson PTE Academic
    • 61 overall with 59 in each of the four language skills (listening, speaking, reading and writing)
