James Madison University (JMU, Madison, or James Madison) is a public research university in Harrisonburg, Virginia. Founded in 1908 as the State Normal and Industrial School for Women at Harrisonburg, the institution was renamed Madison College in 1938 in honor of President James Madison and then James Madison University in 1977. It has since expanded from its origins as a normal school and teacher's college into a comprehensive university. It is situated in the Shenandoah Valley, just west of Massanutten Mountain.

As a biologist, you can explore botany, evolution, genetics, medicine and a plethora of other topics. The JMU biology program is designed to engage undergraduates in hands-on research projects. Our students have access to state-of-the art labs and instrumentation in microscopy, genome sequencing, animal research, microbiology and more. Our faculty work hard to mentor our students, and prepare them for their future. At JMU, our biology majors are more than just students—they are scientists.
