The University of Massachusetts Amherst (UMass Amherst) is a public land-grant research university in Amherst, Massachusetts. It is the flagship campus of the University of Massachusetts system, and was founded in 1863 as the Massachusetts Agricultural College. It is also a member of the Five College Consortium, along with four other colleges in the Pioneer Valley.

Within the Department of Mathematics and Statistics, you may choose to concentrate your studies in statistics through the master of science or PhD program. The MS provides you with training in statistical applications, statistical computing, and theory, preparing you for jobs in industry or government, or for moving on to a PhD in statistics or biostatistics. The PhD option provides a combination of theory and application, preparing you for positions in academia, industry, or government.

As a global university, the University of Massachusetts Amherst is proud to have a diverse and inclusive community of faculty, staff, and students. International students are a vibrant part of our campus, and we look forward to learning more about you through your application for admission.

In fall 2023, 34% of UMass Amherst graduate students were from outside the United States—that’s 2,677 students from 101 countries.
