Pharmacists are patient-centered health care providers educated to ensure that today’s progressively more sophisticated and specialized medications are used safely and effectively. The need for pharmacists continues grow in response to the ever-greater variety of marketed medications as well the increasing number of patients that are on complex multiple drug therapies. As a result of their important role, pharmacists are counted among the most highly respected members of the health care team.

The Division of Pharmaceutical Sciences provides the fundamental scientific basis upon which the practice of pharmacy depends. Knowledge imparted is designed to familiarize the student with the body and the interrelationships of its functions. Additional courses that build upon this foundation are concerned with health and disease states, physical and chemical aspects of compounds, medicinal chemistry, mechanisms, uses and interactions of drugs, pharmaceutical calculations, drug delivery systems, in vitro and in vivo processes affecting drug therapy, pharmaceutical analysis, biopharmaceutics and pharmacokinetics, adverse drug reactions, and individualization of drug therapy.

All programs of LIU Pharmacy are career-oriented. Curricula are evaluated at regular intervals to ensure that they reflect contemporary trends and emphases in medical and health-care practices. Students are afforded both didactic and experiential programs in a variety of settings in order to prepare them for leadership positions in the health-care delivery system. The heavy concentration of pharmaceutical industry and health-care institutions in the New York Metropolitan area provides unusual opportunities for both study and practical experience.
