Bachelor of Science in Chemistry

Chemistry deals with everything in the material world and with all living things at their most fundamental level, molecular and atomic.

  • A thorough background is provided in the five branches of chemistry - analytical, biochemical, inorganic, organic, and physical chemistry
  • Theory taught in the classroom is applied in undergraduate laboratory classes and research projects

Professional preparation

  • Coursework prepares you for advanced study in chemistry or a career in industry or government.
  • A B.S. with Polymer Option is available to those who have an interest in polymer chemistry.
  • A B.A. in Chemistry is offered for those who plan to pursue careers that use chemistry - such as medicine, dentistry, pharmacy, or education.

Hands-on research

Undergraduates are encouraged to do independent research in a field such as organic, inorganic or polymer synthesis, nanotechnology, drug design, laser spectroscopy or environmental analysis. The Department of Chemistry maintains:

  • $8.6 million worth of nuclear magnetic resonance instrumentation
  • mass spectrometers
  • X-ray diffractometers
  • IR-UV-Vis spectrometers
  • liquid and gas chromatographs to identify, purify and characterize chemical compounds

Real-world experience

Minimum requirements for English proficiency:

All undergraduate international applicants must provide proof of English proficiency by meeting the minimum score from one of the following acceptable tests. This requirement can be waived if you meet certain criteria.

  1. TOEFL, IELTS, SAT and ACT scores are valid for two years from the test date. The University of Akron accepts only valid test scores.
  2. All TOEFL results from ETS will be accepted. We do not accept Institutional TOEFL results or certificates from non-University of Akron Engllsh language programs.

  4. If you are a transfer student from a US college or university and have completed an approved college English Composition course with a final grade of C or better.

Transcript Translation and Evaluation

  • If your transcripts are not in English, they must be officially translated. Original copies should be provided together with the translated versions.
  • 2024 summer or fall terms will need to submit a NACES Evaluation along with your application, we accept evaluations from WES or ECE and other accredited members of NACES and AICE. You can find a list of accredited members on their websites.

Official Documents

  • Official documents (including transcripts, test results, and diplomas or certificates) MUST be submitted for full admission, award of scholarships and the issuance of an I-20.
  • An official final transcript must be submitted before you can register for your second semester coursework.
  • We highly recommend that you should submit official rather than unofficial documents to avoid delay in your admission and immigration process.
